We have open periodical stacks, and use a 3M Tattle-Tape in
each issue (time-consuming, but it helps). If a patron tries to
abscond with an issue, an alarm sounds at the counter, and the
student will be asked to show the contents of his/her backpack,
etc.  It may not be a foolproof security system, but it works most
of the time.
