Re: USING WORDPERFECT PRODUCTS FOR SERIALS CONTROL HUESMANN@UWLAX.BITNET 08 Mar 1991 15:27 UTC

I use WordPerfect in coordination with SC350 for several reports and as
input i
nto other systems. For reports, SC350 gives a large set of data elements whi
ch can be produced in serial title lists, and allows up to 10 characters
as a print constant for each field. I take the report thus generated (produced
in ASCII) and move it into WordPerfect to massage the information into a
more pleasing form. So far, we have produced the following lists in this manner
        1) Serials by Subject List
        2) Serials Holdings List (printed out on microfiche - very cheap)
        3) Serials by department (each department has its own set of fund #)
        4) Budgetary reports

I have also used SC350 and WordPerfect to produce lists of control
numbers, which were fed into a barcode generation program to produce by-title
barcodes; lists of serials by department and price to be linked in DBase IV
to serials use statistics (generated by the barcodes on the titles); and a
couple other applications which currently escape me.
Overall, the macros in WordPerfect have provided me with the capability
do do the type of global format changes which the above described lists needed.
While the macros have not solved everything, the resultant "manual" cleanup is
limited indeed.
By the way, I've been using ver. 4.2 out of choice - the bells and
whistles on 5.1 are nice for newsletters and pseudo-destop publishing, but I
haven't (yet!) needed them on these sort of operations. Plus, 4.2 uses less
disk space and less RAM.
