Re: Current Periodicals Shelving Arrangements JUDITH HOPKINS AT SUNY BUFFALO 22 Mar 1991 15:57 UTC

Our approach at the State University of New York at Buffalo seems to be the
complete opposite of the University of Vermont. After arranging both current
issues and bound volumes alphabetically by main entry for many years this
past summer we classified all periodicals and arranged the BOUND VOLUMES in
call number order (though in a separate Periodicals sequence); the unbound
current issues (to which the public has open access) are still arranged
alphabetically. The shelf label for each title gives the call number for
that title so users can go directly from unbound issues to bound volumes.

By the way, John Edens and I are working on an almost completed article on
the topic of shelving of periodicals, both bound and unbound issues, basing
it on a survey we did of ARL libraries.
