510 display Kevin M. Randall 09 Apr 1991 21:41 UTC

At Northwestern University Library, we have suppressed the display of
510 fields from the OPAC (although some 510s do end up displaying--
depending on sequencing of 5XX fields--due to some quirk in the program).
We used to display them, up until 5 or 6 years ago, and when cataloging
a new serial we would strip out a 510 for an index we didn't have. Now
we just totally ignore 510s. Library staff can find what information is
there by using the staff mode.

My personal opinion is that the information is not that necessary. Anyway,
the information on OCLC is going to be much more current than we could even
think of providing locally, so if someone does need it, the Reference
staff could search OCLC. Perhaps someday (I'm not holding my breath) the
updated info in CONSER records will be able to be distributed to libraries
in such a way as to replace the outdated info in local records without changing
any other data.
