Adhesive binding-notched binding Linda Oetter-Ayres 19 Mar 1992 21:11 UTC

I would like to have a discussion in regards to Binding. My questions
are mainly pointed to libraries with a high rate of photocopying
(1 million pages or more) and the kinds of binding they are using and
which methods are holding up for periodicals. I have noticed an increase
in Notched Binding failures within our collection. When I have returned
the failures to the Bindery, the Binders repeat the method, resulting in
a damaged volume (no margins, text eaten, unreadable, uncopiable). Yes,
I have talked with the Binder. They stand very firm behind this method
and will be increasing the number of volumes they will produce as Notched
Binding. They want to move away from the other kinds of leaf attachments,
such as over sew, plain adhesive bind, sew thru folds etc.

The LBI Standard is in process of creating a new edition. This may be a
good opportunity for libraries to look at their bindery standards and make
their opinions be known what is NOT working with today's rate of
photocopying.

I am presently conducting a 3 month study on Notched Binding failures. I would
appreciate any feedback from other libraries to be sent directly to me.
Please, no comments about the "binders" mentioned here. If there are
any interesting notes at the end of my study, I will gladly forward it to
those who are curious.
