ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY

POSITION: Serials Cataloger

AVAILABLE: September 1, 1992

Description:  A faculty position in the Catalog Department of the Technical
Services Division.  Responsible for the original and copy cataloging of
serial publications in a variety of subjects, languages and formats using the
RLIN database and the library's local system, NOTIS.  Creates name and series
authority records for headings used in serials records.  Oversees retrospective
conversion of serials catalog records as part of a state union list project
on OCLC.  Works with the Catalog Department Head and Serials Department
personnel to formulate and update policies and procedures, resolve problems,
and maintain quality control.  Assists with training and supervision of
support staff in activities related to serials cataloging.

Qualifications:  Required qualifications include an MLS from an ALA-accredited
library program; a minimum of two years of professional cataloging experience,
preferably including some involvement with serials in an academic or research
library; a working knowledge of AACR2, LCSH and LC classification schedules;
familiarity with a bibliographic utility, preferably RLIN; and strong inter-
personal, communication, and organizational skills.  Desirable qualifications
include working knowledge of one or more European languages, familiarity with
the USMARC format for serials, and experience with NOTIS or other local
automated library systems.

Salary and Benefits:  Faculty status, generous insurance and retirement
benefits.  Salary is negotiable depending on qualifications, minimum is
$25,000.  This is a twelve-month appointment with twenty-two days annual
leave and additional professional development time available.
