I am thinking that we librarians should think of Adonis and other similar
products as we think of vending machines. Charge the producers for space,
insist that they provide the hardware and set it up (or reimburse us for
both the equipment and the time we spend setting it up), charge them per
end-user trained to use their product, insist that they provide guides and
brochures or pay us for developing, printing and disseminating such
materials, and reimburse us for any costs associated with billing,
accounting, updating etc.

It seems strange that Adonis and other similar products demand
that libraries PAY THEM ($12,000 for Adonis) and then charge each and
every end-user for every article accessed and downloaded.
