                   VIRGINIA NEWSPAPER PROJECT
            PROJECT COORDINATOR - LIBRARY DIRECTOR A
              Position #00180 - Restricted position

SALARY RANGE:  $28,089 - 42,888

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION:  Responsible for the planning,
implementation, and coordination of the Virginia Newspaper Project.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:  Trains, supervises and evaluates project
staff; coordinates and monitors work at three locations;
responsible for problem-solving and publicity for the project;
establishes procedures and works with institutions involved; writes
reports, maintains statistics and financial records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS from an ALA-accredited library school
or foreign equivalent.  Extensive serial cataloging experience with
MARC serials format, AACR2, and newspaper cataloging.  Demonstrated
ability to work with people in a variety of situations.  Experience
with a variety of software packages.  Demonstrated supervisory and
management skills.  Excellent communication skills, both written
and oral.  Frequent travel is required; must have valid drivers
license.  Prefer knowledge of one or more foreign languages; skill
in working with computer programs.

OTHER INFORMATION:  Full-time position for duration of project
(funded through December 1994 for the current grant); reports to
the Library Director, Virginia State Library and Archives and the
Working Committee of the Virginia Newspaper Project.  Twelve days
annual leave, fifteen days sick leave, eleven paid holidays
annually.  Excellent health care benefits, paid retirement and life

compensation plan available.  Six-month probationary period, annual
performance evaluation.  Usual working hours 8:15-5:00, Monday
through Friday.
