UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA LIBRARY ALDERMAN LIBRARY FACULTY OPENING Position Title: Virginia Newspaper Project Cataloging Specialist (temporary grant-funded position, October 1, 1993 - December 31, 1994) Environment: The University of Virginia Library is the 23rd largest library in the Association of Research Libraries. The library system comprises the main library and 10 branches, with independent libraries for law, medicine, and graduate business. The libraries serve 1,800 teaching faculty, 6,000 graduate and professional students, and 11,000 undergraduates. The University Library's NOTIS system, VIRGO, provides an online catalog, circulation, acquisitions, serials check-in, nine Wilson indexes, and other indexes and abstracts. The Library has established an Electronic Text Center with state-of-the-art hardware and software. The University of Virginia is located in a cosmopolitan area within half an hour's drive from the Blue Ridge mountains and two hours from Washington, D.C., and enjoys the rich historical tradition of its founder, Thomas Jefferson. The University Library will be the site of one of the state teams established as part of a multi-year grant to complete the Virginia Newspaper Project (a component of the United States Newspaper Project) in conjunction with the Virginia State Library & Archives, the Virginia Historical Society and the College of William and Mary. The Project will seek extensions until the work has been completed. Job description: Reporting to the Director of Cataloging Services, the Cataloging Specialist will serve as the site team leader and will direct the team in cataloging and monitor the production and quality standards of the team. The position will serve as the liaison between the team and its respective institution and the Project Coordinator at the Virginia State Library & Archives. The Cataloging Specialist: directs daily cataloging, cataloging support and union listing activities; catalogs newspapers and resolves complex cataloging problems; determines holdings and location information; assists in microfilming and preservation decisions; provides documentation, reports and statistics for the team's work. Supervises two fulltime support staff. Participates in project planning by attending monthly meetings and other professional meetings as required. Qualifications and Experience: 1. MLS from an ALA accredited library school or foreign equivalent, required. 2. Knowledge of cataloging, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed., rev., Library of Congress rule interpretations, and OCLC standards, required. 3. Knowledge of serial and newspaper cataloging and control and CONSER guidelines, preferred. 4. Demonstrated organizational skills, required. 5. Ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing, required. 6. Knowledge of computer systems sufficient to perform word processing and manipulate data, required. 7. Supervisory skills, preferred. Salary: $26,000 Benefits: General faculty status, 22 days vacation, generous sick leave, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, state and TIAA/CREF retirement plans.
