Re: UMI full-text titles and UNION LISTS IVERSEN@RIDER.BITNET 27 Sep 1993 16:09 UTC

To SERIALSTers:
Please forgive me ignorance or inexperience on this matter.

Last spring all of our full-text titles on UMI's Business Periodicals
Ondisc were added to NJULS (New Jersey Union List of Serials). This
was done for two reasons: 1) because our extract from NJULS serves as
our local union list of serials; and 2) because a budget cut was
necessitating a cut in periodical subscriptions, and it was decided
to cancel the paper for those titles available on BPOD.

Our holding symbol is now attached to these records in OCLC. We decided
that if we receive any ILL requests for those titles which we had in
our library ONLY on BPOD, that we would not fill those requests.

Have we seriously compromised the intended purpose of the Union List
Subsystem by adding our holdings symbol to those titles only on
CD-ROM, and which do not circulate, or, have we done what was
practical and feasible for our users in our library of 300,000 books
and 1800 periodical subscriptions, given the fact that NJULS is our
local union list?
