Subject: position announcement

HEAD, CATALOG DEPARTMENT.  Florida International University seeks creative
leader for Head, Cataloging Department, University Park Campus, Miami. The
Libraries have Enhance Status and use OCLC and NOTIS to catalog materials.
The successful candidate is responsible for department's daily operation
and overall management; sets goals and priorities; reviews cataloging
policy and procedure; trains and evaluates a staff of 4 catalog
librarians, 11 support staff and a varying number of student assistants;
performs and oversees original cataloging, oversees database maintenance,
special projects and online authority work; serves as major resource for
cataloging questions; coordinates departmental activities with other
library departments.  Reports to the Assistant Director for Technical
Services.  Provides service to the Libraries and the University in an
elective or appointive capacity by serving on Library, University and
professional organizations' committees as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS from an ALA-accredited program; 5 yrs.' professional experience with
progressively increasing supervisory responsibility.  Experience in
cataloging materials in automated environment, knowledge of AACR2, LCSH,
LCRI and an understanding of principles of authority control.  Should
possess strong interpersonal skills and commitment to service mission of
the academic library. Experience with NOTIS preferred.

SALARY: commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Minimum:
$34,000.

RANK: Associate to University Librarian.

Librarians have limited faculty status.  Benefits include 22 days vacation
