     The Policy and Planning Committee of the ALCTS Acquisitions
Section has drafted goals and objectives for the section.  The
committee invites comments from ALL MEMBERS of ALCTS on the
content of the draft in advance of the Midwinter Meeting in Los
Angeles, or at its sessions at Midwinter (Sunday, 2/6, 9:30a-11a,
Hotel Intercontinental--Brunson Room; Monday, 2/7, 8a-11a,
Hilton--Larchmont Room), or after the Midwinter Meeting.

committee's sessions may be communicated to the chairperson:

                    ACQUISITIONS SECTION (AS)

To contribute to library service and librarianship through
encouragement, promotion of, and responsibility for those
activities of ALCTS relating to the acquisition of all formats of
information resources through purchase, lease, and other access
methods, in all types of institutions.  (Section charge, ALA
Handbook of Organization 1993/94, p. H31.)

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES DRAFT FROM POLICY AND PLANNING COMMITTEE
                          June 28, 1993

Publishing and Acquisitions Trends

Goal:     To collect, organize and disseminate information on
          worldwide publishing and acquisitions trends for all
          types of material for all types of libraries.

Objectives:
1.   To identify, collate, and distribute information on trends
     and proposed changes.
2.   To influence national and international initiatives relating
     to standards and future products.
3.   To provide a forum for discussion and continuing review of
     conditions and proposals for the direction of change.

Technology

Goal:     To identify, study and evaluate procedures, issues and
          trends related to the selection, development, and
          implementation of acquisitions systems and related
          technologies by libraries and vendors of library
          materials.

Objectives:
1.   To identify and participate in the development of standards.
2.   To provide a forum for discussion and continuing assessment
     of the state of the art and proposals for the direction of
     change.

Communication and Interaction

Goal:     To provide a forum for facilitating communication
          between acquisitions and library activities; for
          example: collection development, preservation, access
          services.

Objectives:
1.   To develop a means of sharing Acquisitions Section minutes,
     goals and objectives, and other long-range planning with
     other sections in ALCTS.
2.   To offer relevant perspectives from other sections in the
     programs of the Acquisitions Section.

Education

Goal:     To address the educational needs of members and other
          practitioners in matters related to acquisitions.

Objectives:
1.   To help train new practitioners in the field of
     acquisitions.
2.   To provide continuing education opportunities for
     practitioners.
3.   To identify other groups within ALA whose work involves
     acquisitions function and to interact with those group.
4.   To influence the direction of library education in the area
     of acquisitions.

Research

Goal:     To encourage and support research related to the
          acquisition of library materials.

Objectives:
1.   To identify areas needing research.
2.   To compile and analyze statistics derived from and relating
     to research.
3.   To disseminate research findings.

Ethics

Goal:     To provide a forum for attention to the issues related
          to ethics in acquisitions practice.

Objectives:
1.   To draft principles and standards for acquisitions practice.
2.   To develop methods for continuing review of standards of
     ethics.
3.   To plan and mount a long-term campaign to promulgate
     knowledge and acceptance of ethical standards in the
     professional behavior of acquisitions practitioners.

Recruitment

Goal:     To promote acquisitions librarianship as a profession.

Objectives:
1.   To increase the visibility of acquisitions librarians.
2.   To enhance the image of acquisitions librarians.
3.   To educate library administrators about the importance of
     the professional aspects of acquisitions work.
