                          Assistant Head
          Original and Special Materials Cataloging Dept.

Columbia University Libraries seek an experienced serials cataloger
to serve as Assistant Head, Original & Special Materials Cataloging
Dept.  The department (14.5 professionals and 14 support staff)
provides cataloging for all serials, non-book formats and
electronic resources, and specialized materials such as rare books,
Middle East languages, and art and architecture, as well as
original cataloging for all subjects and formats.

The Assistant Head will have responsibility for daily operations of
the department, monitoring workflow and adjusting cataloging
assignments and priorities as needed, training new professionals
and advising staff on matters of cataloging policy and procedure,
and assisting the department head in a variety of administrative
functions.  The encumbent will also have direct responsibility for
supervising the Serials Adding Section (4 support staff) in
maintaining serials holdings, for monitoring serials cataloging
workflow and coordinating serials cataloging activities with other
departments, and will provide original cataloging for serials.  The
encumbent will participate in planning for bibliographic control
and technical services activities through service on committees and
task forces, and is expected to participate actively in relevant
national organizations and initiatives.

Requirements are:  accredited MLS; previous serials cataloging
experience at a professional level with an excellent working
knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures including AACR2r,
LC Subject Headings and Classification, USMARC formats; working
knowledge of two European languages; previous supervisory and
training experience; sound judgment; strong communications and
organizational skills; and aptitude for complex, analytical and
detailed work.  Experience with NOTIS, OCLC and/or RLIN, and
experience in a large research library are desirable.

Salary ranges are:  Librarian I:  $33,000 - $42,900;  Librarian II:
$35,000 - $47,250;  Librarian III:  $38,000 - $57,000.  Excellent
