Kimball <makimb@MAIL.WM.EDU> Subject: POSITION VACANCY CATALOGER, VIRGINIA NEWSPAPER PROJECT Earl Gregg Swem Library The College of William and Mary The Earl Gregg Swem Library of the College of William and Mary is seeking a cataloger for the NEH funded Virginia Newspaper Project. This is a 12-month Professional Faculty position limited to two years with a possible third year, depending on continued grant funding. Salary: $29,000 with benefits, 20 vacation days, generous sick leave, and a choice of health care and retirement plans. ENVIRONMENT: Position reports jointly to the Project Director of the Virginia Newspaper Project at the Library of Virginia and the Serials Collection Management and Preservation Librarian at Swem. The Virginia Newspaper Project is based at the Library of Virginia. The College of William and Mary is a state-supported institution. The library will migrate to the SIRSI automated system in 1995/96 and is fully networked. All staff have state-of-the art equipment. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs daily cataloging and union listing activities of microform and original newspapers. Edits existing OCLC records. Performs original cataloging of newspapers, enters on OCLC, and resolves complex cataloging problems. Records holdings and location information and inputs on national database union list. Assesses physical condition of orginial newspapers in order to determine microfilming and preservation needs. Prepares and provides documentation, reports and statistics. Works cooperatively with Swem Manuscripts and Rare Books staff, Serials staff and the Newspaper Project Cataloging teams at the Library of Virginia and University of Virginia Libraries. Supervises one data entry technician. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. Knowledge of cataloging, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed., rev., Library of Congress rule interpretations and OCLC standards. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge of computer systems sufficient to perform word processing and manipulate data. PREFERRED: Knowledge of serial and newspaper cataloging; demonstrated supervisory skills, and demonstrated interest in the preservation of local history.
