ALCTS Serials Cataloging Institute in San Francisco Jean L. Hirons 03 Oct 1995 18:12 UTC

To those attending the upcoming Serials Cataloging Institute in San Francisco:

I had a question this week about the advanced and beginning sessions and
who should attend which session. I know that you have pre-selected but
I think it would be useful for you to know the focus of each so that you
can participate in the appropriate workshop. Since ALA did not provide
this information, I'll provide it to you now. Better late than never!

The beginning serials cataloging workshop is aimed at those with little
or no serials cataloging experience. In Atlanta the audience consisted
primarily of monograph catalogers who were anticipating getting involved
with serials after format integration and I found the level to be just
right. I will be focusing on the aspects of serials that make them
unique, the designation, links, selection of the title, title changes,
and sources of information.

The advanced serials cataloging workshop consists of specialized
discussions and exercises on the more difficult aspects, such as
supplements, series, reprints, translations, etc.

As both Maureen Landry and I are at LC, there will be a strong LC bias
and of course, a CONSER approach to our discussions. We look forward
to seeing you and hope that this information has been helpful.
