OCLC LDRs and local systems questionnaire responses Mary Chambers 28 Dec 1995 17:29 UTC

In October I put out a questionnarie to Serialst (see below) concerning use
of OCLC Union List Local Data Records (LDRs) to update serials holdings in a
local automated system and/or uploading serials summary holdings from a local
system to OCLC.

To date I have received many requests for a summary of responses, but only 2
actual responses to the questionnaire.

It appears that no one is uploading serial summary holdings from a local
system to the OCLC Union List System.

One person responded that her library is using the Innopac System. This
library does not use OCLC LDR tapes to routinely update the local system.
OCLC tapes were used for the "very first load." No comments were made
regarding satisfaction with the process.

Another person responded that his library is using the DRA System. OCLC
LDR tapes are used to update the local system once a year. While they are
satisfied with the process now, they did have some "major mixups" at first due
in large part to the fact that they are part of a consortium system which
shares the same bibliographic records among the individual libraries within the
consortium. "Our [summary holdings] records were getting mixed up with one
another." This person also stated that this LDR update method has "helped us a
lot in our retrospective work." He did not elaborate further.

Following is the original questionnaire:

Is anyone out there using OCLC local data records (LDRs) for serials to
update summary holdings in a local system? In other words, are you loading
your own LDRs for serials directly into your local automated system from
OCLC?

If so:

What brand of local system do you have?

Do you update your local system on a routine basis?

Are you satisfied with the results? Why? or Why not?

Do you encounter any special problems in the process? Please explain.

     Other comments?

Alternatively, is anyone uploading serials summary holdings to the OCLC union
list subsystem from a local system?

If so:

What brand of local system do you have?

Do you update OCLC on a routine basis?

Are you satisfied with the results? Why? or Why not?

Do you encounter any special problems in the process? Please explain.

     Other comments?

Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated.
