BIBLIOGRAPHIC ACCESS SERVICES LIBRARIAN

Rank:    Senior Assistant Librarian (tenure track)

Salary: $43,680 - $71,568 for 12 months (commensurate with  qualifications
and experience); 10 month option available with proportionate salary
reduction

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Assistant University Librarian (AUL) for
Bibliographic/Physical Access Services and working in a team oriented
environment, the successful candidate is expected to perform original and
complex copy cataloging for monographs and serials in all formats according
to national standards, with emphasis on serials cataloging and record
management; resolve conflicts in bibliographic records and make decisions
on enhancing access to bibliographic records; train and guide support staff
in the theory and practices of cataloging and acquisitions, and in
developing and implementing operational procedures; assess new national and
international technological developments relevant to bibliographic access,
including access via the Internet, and make policy and procedural
recommendations to the AUL; serve as advisor and resource person to the
Database Management Team (includes authority control), and the Monographs
and Serials Teams (includes acquisitions and cataloging); assess the
overall effectiveness of the team operations and make recommendations to
the AUL; serve as backup to the AUL as needed; keep up with current
developments in the practice of cataloging and acquisitions in light of
changing information technology, as well as with developments in
Librarianship in general; contribute to library planning and policy
development; participate in library and university committees and projects;
serve as the bibliographic access librarian representing the university on
California State University systemwide or regional forums such as the
Committee on Bibliographic Control.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

1. ALA-accredited MLS
2. At least four recent years of increasingly responsible cataloging and
supervisory experience in an academic library technical services, including
two or more years in serials cataloging and management
3. Three or more years experience with a major bibliographic utility and
automated library system
4. Extensive knowledge of standard cataloging tools such as AACR2, LC
Subject Headings and LC Classification, MARC formats, CONSER editing guide,
CONSER cataloging manual
5. Ability to adapt to change and to work cooperatively in a culturally
diverse environment
6. Ability to work in a team environment
7. Flexibility to work with multiple projects and priorities
8. Evidence of commitment to user needs
9. Effective oral and written communication skills
10. Evidence of ability to meet requirements for reappointment and tenure
11. Evidence of leadership and initiative
12. Evidence of managerial ability

Preferred:

1. Experience with OCLC and Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated systems
2. Experience with acquisitions operations in an academic library
3. Experience in managing electronic resources from the INTERNET

The Library:   The centrally located University Library is housed in a
six-story building with floor space of 205,526 assignable square feet and
seating for more than 2,400 students.  The centralized reference department
serves a predominantly  undergraduate student body of 20,000 in six
colleges: Agriculture, Arts, Business Administration, Engineering,
Environmental Design, and Science as well as a School of Education and a
School of Hotel and Restaurant Management.  The University Library has a
strong commitment to automation with circulation, acquisitions, reserve,
and serials control currently computerized.  We have a user-friendly online
public access catalog, many CD-ROM services, a heavily used software
collection, and an active online search service.  The collections exceed
2.7 million items: included are approximately 600,000 volumes, over 2.1
million microfilms, 2,870 periodical titles, and 20 newspapers.

The University:   California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is one of
22 campuses in the California State University.  It is located about 30
miles east of downtown Los Angeles, and is part of one of the most dynamic
economic and cultural regions in the country.  Noted for its beautiful and
historic 1,400-acre campus -- once the Arabian horse ranch of cereal
