Hemhauser <MH8498A@AMERICAN.EDU> Subject: Periodical Security Methods We are planning to switch to an electromagnetic security system such as the 3M or Knogo system and would like to know what have been the experiences of other libraries regarding placing the security strips in all or almost all current pe riodicals. (Our loose periodicals are NOT in open stacks.) We check in about 1 750 issues per month. How much time would it take to place strips in all of them? Has anyone noticed a decline in theft from tagging everything? Does any one have experience with a random tagging operation? I imagine that tagging loose periodicals that are maintained in open stacks is worth the effort, what about tagging issues in closed stacks? When we had a closed stack situation we did not strip the loose issues--nor did we experience any loss. However, now that we have an open stack situation we strip everything. Judging from the number of times our patrons forget that they have a journal in their backpacks I would say our time is well spent. ---------- (2) Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 17:29:00 PST From: "LaJudice, Rose" <RLajudic@HS1.BUFFALO.EDU> Subject: Re: Periodical Security Methods (Mark Hemhauser) Dear Mark, We have the "Checkpoint" security system with electronic tagging of all bound and loose journals. It has been a big difference in the rate of theft. If someone leaves the library without properly checking out an item an alarm is sounded. We have square shaped stickers that look like barcodes. Each day as I check in the journals I place a tag on the lower left back cover. When journal are bound we place a similiar sticker on the back inside cover and cover it up with a book pocket. To place strips on all exisitng journals sounds like a job for volunteers or students. It would be time consuming but worth it. Good Luck Rose M. We have open stacks, but find that we only strip things that are used most often, since the strips cost about .15 each-it runs into lots of money. We also feel that they just cut the pages out if they think every thing is stripped. Most of our opopular titles are retained on microfiche, since we have much mutilation.
