The Texas Library Association will hold its Annual Conference (the
third largest in the world!) in the dynamic city of Houston, April 23-
26, 1996.  Last year over 7100 participants enjoyed programs designed
to appeal to librarians and staff in all types of libraries, covering
a wide range of issues.

This year the theme of the conference is "Libraries: Linking
Technology and Tradition." Keynote speakers are: Paul Evan Peters of
the Coalition for Networked Information, speaking at the First
General Session on Wed. afternoon, April 24, and Newbery-award-
winning author Virginia Hamilton, speaking at the Second General
Session, Thursday afternoon, April 25.

OTHER OUTSTANDING SPEAKERS: John Lienhard of National Public Radio on
the metaphor of the book, Sandra Balderrama on diversity, Harold
Hodgkinson on a demographic look at tomorrow, Suzanne Thorin,
Associate Director of the Library of Congress on digitizing knowledge
and the American Memory Project, Laura Gassaway on copyright and the
Internet, and authors Karleen Koen, Rosellen Brown, Naomi Shihab Nye,
Anita R. Bunkley, Sharon Creech, Norman Sherry, and many more!

PRECONFERENCES: Eight preconferences covering such topics as
distance learning, youth services and the Internet, the World Wide
Web, library buildings in the era of the Virtual Library, capital
campaigns, and storytelling will be offered Monday, April 22.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Tuesday evening: a Welcome Party at the amazing
Houston Museum of Natural Science; Wednesday evening: a dazzling
President's Party at the elegant Wortham Theatre Center, complete
with music, entertainment, and readings by Rosellen Brown, Naomi
Shihab Nye, and Lionel G. Garcia.  Thursday evening: a fantasy
experience at Magic Island including a buffet and magic show.

Single day or multiple day registration is available.  Exhibits open
Wednesday morning and close at noon Friday.  Well over 650 exhibitors
are expected this year.
