POSITION:               Serials Cataloging/Acquisitions Librarian

DEPARTMENT:     Serials and Acquisitions Services

DIVISION:               Technical Services

REPORTS TO:     Head, Serials and Acquisitions Services

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Department Head, performs original and
copy cataloging and recataloging for all types of serials. Identifies,
organizes and carries out special projects for serials cataloging in
consultation with the Head of Serials Cataloging. Develops, implements and
monitors special projects in serials and monographic acquisitions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs original and copy cataloging and recataloging for all types of
serials, in all formats, using the MARC format, AACR2, LC Rule
interpretations, DDC and LCSH.  Organizes and carries out special projects
and studies related to serials cataloging in consultation with the Head of
Serials Cataloging.  Projects include, but are not limited to: cataloging of
Africana materials, Government Publications, electronic materials and micro
formats.

Develops, implements and monitors management studies and special projects in
serials and monographic acquisitions such as: serial and monographic vendor
evaluation, workflow efficiency analyses, approval plan evaluations,
statistical record keeping, maintenance of standing order and blanket order
plans, etc.

Acts as a liaison between SAS and other departments in the library
concerning specific projects and duties, or as assigned.

Participates in departmental meetings and deliberations. Participates on
library-wide committees and task forces and keeps abreast of developments
within the fields of cataloging and serials and monographic acquisitions.

Related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited library
school.  At least 1-3 years post-MLS experience in serials cataloging,
including contribution to national bibliographic utility (preferably OCLC)
and adherence to national standards. Experience with automated library
systems, preferably NOTIS.  Knowledge of one or more modern European
languages.  Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to work
independently as well as in groups. Demonstrated success with multiple
assignments. Experience with workflow analysis and needs assessment. Ability
to organize, analyze, and recommend solutions to complex problems.
Preferred:  Experience cataloging in the Dewey Decimal Classification.
Experience using ANSI Z39.44 standards for serial holdings. Experience
working in serials and monographic acquisitions in an automated environment.

Salary:  $26,400, minimum.

Job Announcement

SERIAL CATALOGING LIBRARIAN.

Kansas State University Libraries seek an enterprising
professional to fill a vacancy for a Serial Cataloging Librarian
in its soon-to-be merged acquisitions/cataloging department.  The
Libraries are a member of OCLC and utilize the Voyager library
system.  Management of KSU Libraries is based on collaboration in
a team environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: perform original and complex copy cataloging of
serial publications in a variety of formats, languages and
subjects; supervise several paraprofessional staff; facilitate
the serials team; lead the series authority team; and serve as
the library's primary resource person on serials cataloging and
provide significant input on policy and procedural decisions
affecting serials control; develop cooperative and partnership
relations with academic departments.  Duties may be subject to
change following implementation of progressive reorganization
plan.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program; 2
years serials cataloging experience in library using AACR2r,
USMARC bibliographic formats, ANSI standards for serials
holdings, LC classification and subject headings; familiarity
with a bibliographic utility such as OCLC; excellent
interpersonal, problem-solving, written and verbal communication
skills; and ability to work in a collegial and rapidly changing
environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: academic library experience;
demonstrated supervisory experience; demonstrated knowledge of
electronic serials issues; knowledge of one or more foreign
languages.

SALARY: mid-high $20's; tenure-track; 12-month contract.

Librarians have faculty rank and are eligible for tenure.
Benefits include: 22 annual vacation days; 12 days of sick leave;
Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance; choice of retirement
plans.  KSU Libraries utilizes Endeavor's client-based Voyager
software to access OPACs, indexes, databases, Internet, etc. and
in 1997 will celebrate the completion of a 28 million dollar
expansion/renovation of the main library.  Kansas State
University, a land-grant institution with an enrollment of
19,000, is a 664-acre campus convenient to both business and
residential districts.  Manhattan, a community of 40,000, is
located 2 hours west of Kansas City in the scenic Flint Hills of
northeast Kansas.
