library assistant IV. This is a full time- permanent position with

 Information on the position:

 DUTIES:  Under the general direction of the Head, Serials Cataloging Section,
 Catalog Department, the incumbent will catalog serial publications
 in all subjects with an emphasis on governmental publications, in
 all languages, except East Asian languages, and in all formats,
 using records found in the OCLC database and prepare worksheets for
 new input to the database.  Incumbent will catalog according to the
 latest edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2), the
 CONSER Editing Guide, the OCLC Serials Format and other MARC
 formats, and the latest departmental procedures.  Incumbent will
 resolve cataloging problems, and provide bibliographic support of
 the UCI OPAC database.  Incumbent will organize and process
 materials as part of the workflow.

 REQUIREMENTS:  Proven ability to interact effectively with a
 culturally diverse population; proven ability to work productively
 and efficiently in cooperation with supervisors and other staff
 members, and in conformity with departmental standards and
 procedures; proven ability to work independently and complete work
 with minimal direction and frequent interruptions; proofreading
 skills for editing catalog records at the computer terminal; proven
 ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing,
 with supervisors and co-workers; skills in setting priorities and
 completing work in a timely manner; proven ability to operate a
 computer workstation; working knowledge of at least one language
 other than English (European languages preferred); working knowledge of
 both Roman, and non-Roman alphabetic languages to ascertain choice and
 form of entry including access points, to provide correct diacritical
 marks and capitalizations, and to prepare grammatically correct notes,
 uniform titles, and other records for items in those languages, and
 to understand the subject matter well enough to assign appropriate
 subject headings and classification, and to verify whether the item
 is a serial or a monograph; working knowledge of reference sources
 for choosing personal and corporate names and series not found in
 the online authority file; working knowledge of the MARC Formats to
 maintain national standards on OCLC; recent successful cataloging
 experience in an academic institution using the AACR2, LC
 classification and LC subject headings and which catalogs via an
 online system such as OCLC; skill to write clear standard and
 technical English for manuals, procedures, and memos.

 DESIRABLE:  General knowledge of UC Library operations and
 departmental procedures and workflow; working knowledge of the
 structure and access to Innovative Interfaces Inc. OPAC and the UC
 MELVYL System; working knowledge of the latest editions of Anglo-American
 Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. Rev. (AACR2R, 1988); Library of Congress Rules
 Interpretations (LCRIs); Cataloging Service Bulletin (CSB); CONSER
 Editing Guide; CONSER Cataloging Manual; Library of Congress
 Classification Schedules; Subject Headings, MARC Format; National
 Library of Medicine Classification; and Subject Headings (MESH).
