Bulletin of Hispanic Studies

I wrote to you on 15 January to inform you of the position reached in
litigation between the Universities of Liverpool and Glasgow over the
Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. There have been no further developments
since then and we have proceeded with publication, the first issue for
1996 having been recently circulated. I hope that you have now received
your copy and I am pleased to say that we expect subsequent issues for
this year to appear on schedule.

In January, I explained that the Editorial Team in Liverpool had been
reconstituted with Dorothy Severin, Gilmour Professor of Spanish,
continuing as General Editor. James Higgins, Professor of Latin American
Literature, has joined her as Associate Editor and they are supported by
senior colleagues in the Department of Hispanic Studies in the University
of Liverpool: Roger Wright, Joan Llu!s Marfany and Maria Guterres. There
have also been changes to the Editorial Committee, as you will see from
the list printed inside the front cover of the current issue of the
Bulletin and I have been asked to tell you that, since that issue was
produced, the following members have written to inform us that they have
resigned from the Committee: Professor Jos  Maria D!ez Borque; Professor
Margit Frenk; Professor Francisco Rico and Professor Arthur Terry. We
thank these members, and others who had resigned earlier, for their past
service.

We are pleased to welcome new members of the Editorial Committee as shown
in the January 1996 issue and those whose names will first appear in the
next number.

BULLETIN OF HISPANIC STUDIES

You will know of the dispute (which became litigious) between the
Universities of Glasgow and Liverpool as to which of them has the right
to house, edit and publish the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. The dispute
developed following the decision taken unanimously at the Meeting of the
Editorial Board and Editorial Team at Birmingham in August 1995 to
relocate their centre of publishing and editorial operations from the
University of Liverpool to the University of Glasgow in order to maintain
the Bulletin's academic independence and international reputation. The
legal action was brought by the University of Liverpool in an attempt to
stop the Bulletin being published from Glasgow.

The Editorial Board and Editorial Team wish to inform you of the decision
in the case, reached by Lord Gill at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.
Lord Gill dismissed the Motions for Interim Orders brought by the
University of Liverpool to prevent publication/editing from Glasgow.
Given the extremely large positive response from contributors etc. in
favour of having their articles and contributions edited and published
from Glasgow rather than Liverpool and the almost entire support of the
Editorial Team and Editorial Board for the move to Glasgow, Lord Gill
stated:

"It is undesirable that a journal of this quality should be brought out
under such improvised editorial arrangements [at Liverpool] when
effective editorial arrangements, in keeping with established practice,
are already in place [in Glasgow].

In my view, it is desirable that the next issue should be published by
those who can demonstrate here and now that they have a wide measure of
assent among the contributors.".

In view of this ruling, we are free to edit and publish the Bulletin
under its own title from Glasgow. For your information, we enclose a
photocopy of the inside cover of the 1996 Bulletin. confirming the
continuity of essentially the same Editorial Team and Editorial Board. At
present, the University of Liverpool are free to continue publishing
their own Bulletin but, of course, they will have neither the continuity
of the same Editorial Team and Editorial Board nor the benefit of the
vast majority of articles and reviews submitted to the Bulletin.

The Bulletin of Hispanic Studies for Volume LXXIII Year 1996 will be
produced by Edinburgh University Press for the University of Glasgow.

The first issues of the Bulletin, Volume LXXIII (1996) are soon to
appear. Our publishing schedule is as follows:

January Issue   which is, as usual, a Monographic Number       March 1996

April Issue                                                    May 1996

July Issue                                                     July 1996

October Issue                                                  October 1996

We take this opportunity to record that the great majority of
internationally respected hispanists who are contributors of articles and
book reviews for publication in future issues have confirmed in writing
their support and their agreement to publish their work in the Bulletin
at the University of Glasgow.

Please note the following arrangements as regards subscriptions.

We are aware that a proportion of the Bulletin's subscribers (a large
proportion in the case of institutions) have already paid their
subscriptions for Calendar/Volume Year 1996 under the system administered
to date by Liverpool. We are also aware that a proportion of especially
individual subscribers, having become aware of the dispute, have
refrained from renewing their subscriptions pending clarification.

To minimise inconvenience for all subscribers, to maintain their goodwill
and to demonstrate the importance of their continued support to the
Bulletin, we propose to send all paid up subscribers the issues of the
1996 Bulletin as they appear without requiring any additional payment or
rearrangement.

We ask those subscribers who have not yet renewed their subscriptions to
send us payment at their convenience but, as soon as possible, after
receipt of the January issue. A cheque may be sent at any time to the
above address and made payable to the "University of Glasgow" and will be
acknowledged with thanks. Details of other methods of payment to
facilitate subscription renewal, e.g. for overseas subscribers, will be
provided in the January issue. We undertake to keep subscribers informed
as to any significant developments affecting the Bulletin with regard to
any further legal proceedings.

We welcome observations and enquiries from Subscribers either by letter
or by fax and are particularly grateful for updated information about
changes of address or University affiliation.
