     The Acquisitions Section/Technology for Acquisitions
Committee, in cooperation with the Serials Section, will present a
program at the ALA Annual Conference in New York City on
Saturday, July 6, 1996 from 2:00-4:00 pm entitled "The Webbed
Acquisitions Librarian." The program will cover uses of a home
page for acquisitions, the development of the AcqWeb home page,
the technical and design aspects of creating and loading a home
page on a local server, and the future of Web pages.

There will be three speakers with time for questions after
the presentations. Robin Dixon and Mike Grabenstein are from the
NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Library; Dixon is Internet
Specialist/Reference Librarian and Grabenstein is the UNIX
Administrator. Anna Belle Leiserson is Acquisitions Librarian at
Vanderbilt Law Library.

Dixon and Grabenstein are the creators of the Web site of
the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Library
(URL=http:/www-library.gsfc.nasa.gov). They will address
general technical aspects of Web working and home page building,
the aesthetics and design of a home page, practical aspects of home
page construction and use, in-house versus external access to a
home page, the most common problems which can be encountered
in home page building, and the future of the Web and home pages.

Leiserson, or "Ms. Acquisitions" as she is known on the
AcqWeb home page
(URL=http:www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/acqs.html), is the
editor of AcqWeb. She will discuss the development of AcqWeb,
a tool widely used by Library staff. Among Leiserson's topics
will be her initial focus and intent in creating AcqWeb; the
viability of various acquisitions operations, such as ordering and
bibliographic verification, on the Web; review of the uses made of
various acquisitions home pages; and the future direction of AcqWeb.

General topics which will be discussed by all speakers are:
review and evaluation of home pages and the delegation of
responsibilities for Web page work. Who currently does this
work? Who does the design, the HTML coding and maintenance?
Who should be responsible for this work?
This program will be of interest to acquisitions and
collection development librarians as well as others who want to
learn more about creating their own World Wide Web pages and
using other home pages.

Subject: ALA, NYC Program Announcement
              ALCTS Scholarly Communications Discussion Group

What is happening with scholarly communication in the humanities? Is the
virtual library and digitized information having any impact on humanities
research? If a humanities scholar could create the ideal library, what
would it be like? Professor Peter Manchester, Department of Comparative
Studies, State University of New York at Stony Brook, will meet with the
ALCTS Scholarly Communications Discussion Group at the ALA Annual
Conference to present a humanities scholar's viewpoints on these issues.

When: 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 7th
        Where: Javits Convention Center - 1A, 10.

Join us for a lively discussion!
