THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries.  It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development.  A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths.  The Library is engaged
in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog, and various
automation projects which include network access to scholarly information
and digital preservation.

Within the University Library, Technical Service units pursue a course of
continual change and innovation in building integrated, university-wide
information access systems.  These systems are designed to provide readers
rapid physical access to new materials in all formats as well as a
high-quality bibliographic record of Yale's extraordinary library
collections, which have developed over the last three centuries and which
continue to grow at nearly 100,000 titles per year, including an
increasing number of materials in digital form.  To help sustain and shape
its role in the changing world of information resources, the Yale
University Library seeks an energetic and experienced acquisitions
librarian to help provide leadership in Technical Services and to join the
Library's general management team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief Acquisitions Librarian will report to the Associate University
Librarian with responsibility for technical services.  The Chief
Acquisitions Librarian will work closely with the Associate University
Librarian who has responsibility for administering the collection budget
and will exercise leadership for the policies and procedures used in all
units of the library for ordering, receiving and paying for Library
materials in a changing and technologically sophisticated environment.  In
addition, the Chief Acquisitions Librarian will head the central
Acquisitions Department in the Sterling Memorial Library.  The Librarian
will be responsible for fostering a team approach in the Department, which
consists of 30 FTE staff organized in four service units: Order Support,
Monograph Support, Serials Support and Fiscal Support.  The Acquisitions
Department annually places over 17,000 orders for both serials and
monographs, receives over 56,000 serial and monographic titles, about 60%
of which are from foreign sources, provides full-level copy cataloging for
nearly 15,000 titles at the point of receipt and processes payments of
over $5.3 million.  The Department makes widespread use of approval and
prepayment plans, has a limited exchange program, and also handles gifts.
The Chief Acquisitions Librarian will serve on the Library's Technical
Services Management Group, the Library Management Council, and various
other key governing groups within the Library and is expected to be
professionally active.

QUALIFICATIONS:

An MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent combination of
experience and training.  At least eight years of relevant professional
experience with demonstrated achievement supervising staff and
administering acquisitions or serials work, preferably in an academic
library setting. Creative and dynamic leadership and team-building
abilities.  Strong service orientation and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent grasp of the domestic and foreign book and serials trade,
including an appreciation of current developments and trends and proven
expertise in fiscal management and bibliographic control.  Strong computer
skills, including experience with bibliographic utilities, automated
library management systems such as NOTIS, the World Wide Web, and
workstation-based software such as Excel.  Excellent analytical and
organizational skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others, including
vendors, at a wide range of organizational levels and in a rapidly
changing and demanding environment.
