Subject: dates & designations

        Thank you to everyone who responded to my question regarding the use
of designations in copy cataloging (which IS essentially what I was talking
about, rather incoherently) when cataloging without the original issue in
hand.  The answers were so helpful I wish I had asked sooner!   The
consensus was to accept 362 tags in the OCLC record unless there was an
obvious reason not to, and to make changes only if the copy in hand
pre-dated that of the OCLC record.
