LIBRARY AS PLACE : DESIGNING FOR TRANSITION

Association of College and Research Libraries/New England Chapter
        Fall Conference
        October 25, 1996, 9:15 - 3:00, registration 8:00 - 9:15
        University of New Hampshire
        Memorial Union Building

The theme for the 1996-1997 ACRL/NEC conferences will be
library as place, designing libraries for new services and methods of
working. As many libraries are being renovated, adding space and being
replaced, now is the time to think about the services we provide and how
we do our work. Are the old patterns still the best? How do we go
about planning space for our current needs and those that are coming?

The ACRL/NEC Fall conference will feature D. Kaye Gapen, who has
recently acted as a consultant to the Arizona State University as they
restructured their organization. There will also be a panel discussion
featuring an architect familiar with designing libraries, a librarian
who has been involved in a major project and a library director. The
three perspectives will be, the library as an architectural statement,
the library as a service point and the library as an attraction for
students and donors. Carol Fleishauer of MIT will moderate.

There will be breakout sessions on specific topics, including
designing specific spaces, designing a library with an inclusive,
collegial committee, coordinating a building project and one other topic
to be announced.

The University of New Hampshire is located in Durham, New Hampshire,
90 miles North of Boston, MA on a bucolic land-grant campus. The
Memorial Union Building has recently been renovated and expanded.
