Daphne,

Like you said, there is never a good time for a name change, but in my
opinion, it's the least problematic when the change occurs with the 1st
issue of a new volume.  Any advance warning is always appreciated.  As
far as the renewals are concerned, it's always best to have complete
payments posted to the correct record, and a change in the middle of the
year causes a problem.  Just as long as you don't make the change in the
middle of a volume/year, you won't be upsetting too many librarians.
Another word of advice, if you are making a change, make it a good
one--librarians especially dislike frequent titles changes in the same

please,please,puh-lease start the name change with the first issue of the
new volume, no matter when it starts!

And let it be a well-thought out name change and not one you'll change
again in a couple issues!

Ms. Greenwood is providing us a rare opportunity to advise, in
advance, on a title change. Thank you for thinking of us -- if only
all publishers would be so thoughtful!

I would suggest that you make sure that the title change is begun at
the beginning of a new volume, if the publication uses volume
numbering. If the numbering is consecutive, start the new title in
the new year, or whatever seems like a logical break.

If possible, make an announcement on the editorial page of the last
issue of the former title, and then explain the change again in the
first issue of the new title. This documents the change for readers
and librarians both.

You did not mention what the old title was and what you are thinking
of changing it too. One thing that drives librarians crazy is when the
title change is simply a change in the order of words or when a single
word is added to what is already there.

I will send you a copy of "What's In a Name," which is a brochure
published by ALA that addresses presentation guidelines for serial
publications.  All categories of sin are covered there.

IMHO, I think that the best time for a name change is the beginning of a
new volume AND year.  While it is not necessary for serialists to have the
information on title change at the time of renewal, it is important for us
to have the information BEFORE the first issue with the new title arrives.
All too frequently title changes get lumped in with free samples because we
are not on the lookout.
