What do Postmasters Know? Albert Henderson 13 Dec 1996 21:48 UTC

NEWS - For those postmasters who claimed that delivery by USPS direct to
libraries and other campus locations was "not an option:"

The USPS does indeed make direct deliveries to a number of campuses, sorting
down to building and/or departmental level thus eliminating the cost of
campus mailrooms to intercept, hand sort, delay, and finally deliver it

Oklahoma State University - Stillwater OK - ZIP 74078
Penn State U - University Park PA - ZIP 16802
University of Californtia - Berkeley - ZIP 94720
Dartmouth - ZIP 03755
Princeton - ZIP 08544
Columbia - ZIP 10027
U New Hampshire - ZIP 03824
Cornell - ZIP 14853
Lehigh - ZIP 18015

This is just a small sample assembled in an hour or so perusing the USPS
database. Most large post offices maintain a printed copy of the ZIP+4
carrier route detail, so you can actually find some examples of how this is
done and show them to your incredulous Postmasters.

Among those schools still apparently in the dark ages:

University of Connecticut, SUNY - many locations, MIT, Rutgers, CCNY,
Pettsburgh, U. Mass., Virginia Commonwealth, University of Missouri,
Appalachian State, Southwestern U.

Thanks to all who replied to my query. I will probably prepare an article or
editorial on this waste of library money, so I would welcome comments and
experiences.

This is very interesting. We have heard from 3 universities (Kansas State
University, Appalachian State University, and Southwestern University).

How many other academic libraries find direct delivery by USPS is "not an
option?"

Please reply direct to me at 70244.1532@compuserve.com and I will gladly
summarize results for the list.
