                         Position Description (MLS)

POSITION TITLE: Project Coordinator/Cataloger, Vermont Newspaper Project
(temporary position)
REPORTS TO: Co-Director of the Vermont Newspaper Project

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
In consultation with project co-directors at the University of Vermont and
with staff at the Department of Libraries, the coordinator/cataloger is
responsible for the day-to-day management of the Vermont Newspaper Project,
based at the Dept. of Libraries in Montpelier. The project coordinator is
responsible for the bibliographic control activities at home base and in
the field, including supervising staff, establishing and implementing
procedures, and monitoring workflow and output. This is a twelve to
eighteen month grant-supported, temporary full-time position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervises project staff.
  2. Implements cataloging procedures.
  3. Monitors workflow and progress of the project; reports progress on
     specified schedule.
  4. Develops and maintains state newspaper project database. Oversees OCLC
     bibliographic and union listing activities.
  5. Catalogs newspapers according to AACR2/CONSER/USNP guidelines.
  6. Maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed.
  7. Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from ALA-accredited school; one or more years of cataloging and
supervisory experience, preferably in a research institution; working
knowledge of AACR2 and MARC serials format; experience with newspapers
and/or serials; experience with online computer systems, including OCLC,
database management software, and Internet applications (e.g. electronic
mail and World Wide Web); strong interpersonal and communication skills and
the ability to work with a variety of people; demonstrated ability to pay
attention to detail; flexibility and willingness to shift priorities
according to current needs; a sense of humor; commitment to professional
growth. Some travel is required.

SALARY & APPLICATION INFORMATION:

Faculty member will be hired at the Instructor or Assistant Professor
level. Salary minimum: $26,000. Generous benefits package includes:

                            Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Cataloging Specialist, Vermont Newspaper Project (temporary
position)

REPORTS TO: Project Coordinator/Cataloger, Vermont Newspaper Project

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Project Coordinator/Cataloger, the Cataloging
Specialist is responsible for descriptive and copy cataloging of newspapers
as part of the Vermont Newspaper Project, based at the Dept. of Libraries
in Montpelier. This is a twelve to eighteen month grant-supported,
temporary full-time position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Catalogs newspapers according to AACR2/CONSER/USNP guidelines.
  2. Creates holdings statements in the OCLC/LDR format.
  3. May revise project OCLC data input.
  4. Maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed.
  5. Updates and maintains state newspaper project database.
  6. Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree with broad academic background and two years of
cataloging or library technical services-related work experience or
equivalent. Serials cataloging experience is highly desirable, as is the
ability to work with online computer systems, including OCLC bibliographic
and union list systems, database management software, and Internet
applications (e.g. electronic mail and World Wide Web). Ability to work
independently and in a production-oriented environment. Ability to pay
attention to detail, assimilate and apply intricate rule systems, handle
complex work processes, and make independent judgments. Ability to analyze
materials and complex relationships between various titles. Some travel is
required.
