PNL/SRLC/162 February 1997 Dear Subscriber BULLETIN OF HISPANIC STUDIES We refer to a letter about the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies dated January 1997, addressed to subscribers, from Professor Geoffrey Ribbans and Professor Sir Graeme Davies. This letter may mislead you about the University of Liverpool's intentions for the future publication of the BHS. Publication of the Bulletin from Liverpool will be vigorously pursued. The University of Liverpool is committed to its long-term development despite the parallel publication of a Bulletin by the University of Glasgow. 1. There has been no break in publication of the Bulletin by Liverpool University Press, and publication of all issues is on schedule; future issues in the current volume and future volumes are all planned to be issued on time. The majority of subscribers have renewed their subscriptions. 2. We have excellent arrangements for editing the journal to the highest standards, effectively and efficiently. The Bulletin at Liverpool (where it has been edited since 1923) has a strong Editorial Team based in a Department of Hispanic Studies rated Grade 5 in the recent research assessment exercise undertaken by the Higher Education Funding Council. The Team is supported by a distinguished international Editorial Committee, and all those involved are committed to maintaining and enhancing the traditional standards of the Bulletin. 3. There has been no diminution in the rate of submission of articles for publication and books for review; these are being processed, and articles and reviews are being published, as quickly as possible. In the past year the number of articles published has been increased substantially. 4. While the Opinion of Lord Gill in the Court of Session in Edinburgh did not prevent publication of a Bulletin from Glasgow, neither did he seek to prevent publication from Liverpool (as he took no view about ownership of the journal). That remains the case today and the selective quotation by Professor Ribbans and Sir Graeme from a long Opinion does not properly reflect the full argument. 5. While the University of Liverpool chose not to pursue its original action in the Court of Session, preferring to concentrate its efforts on continuing publication, there is no barrier to that action being raised again or indeed to the raising of a different action. If the University considers it necessary to do so, the matter will certainly be pursued in the Courts. We are most grateful for the support and encouragement that we have received from scholars and subscribers world-wide for our commitment to continued publication from Liverpool of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. Yours sincerely, Professor Philip N. Love Professor Stephen R. L.
