United Nations Publication Numbers Mary Welch 11 Apr 1997 16:53 UTC

Greetings! We are going to begin classifying our United Nations documents
in LC classification. Currently they are shelved using the United
Nations number. Our government documents bibliographer would like
the United Nations number preserved in a searchable field in the
bib record. The question is which field would be most appropriate?
She feels the number is actually a call number and should be put in
the 086 field. In a quick search, I could not find an OCLC record
putting this number in the 086 field. The CONSER practice seems to
be to mention this number as a "publication sales number"in a 500
note. This makes me think of using subfield "a" of the 037 field
   to access this number.

How do other libraries handle access to the United Nations number?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please respond
directly to me and if there are enough responses I will summarize
for the list. Thanks in advance.
