(Fwd) Recyclers of CDs & Microfiche Jay Harris 18 Apr 1997 23:53 UTC
Please excuse any cross-duplication of this information. As you can see, it was posted previously to a couple of other listservs. Here's a response to the recycler's dilemma; it was shared with me over a year ago. Hope this helps fuel the discussion about recycling & reusing materials rather than filling up landfills. Sincerely, Jay Harris. ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Date: Thu, 7 Mar 1996 11:03:36 CST Reply-to: Library cataloging and authorities discussion group" <AUTOCAT@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU>, MYERS%TWSUVM.BITNET@UABDPO.DPO.UAB.EDU From: "Nancy L. So many people asked for a summary of the informa- tion I received on recylers that I have compiled it below. I received numerous responses (thank you, thank you)...but they can be summarized as three vendors for recycling of CD-ROMs and one vendor for recycling fiche. Recycling CD-ROMS: 1. Digital Audio Disc Corporation Attention: Disc Recycling Program 1800 North Fruitridge Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804-1788 Technical Support Number: 1-800-776-6939 Instructions: They will recycle paper sleeves, shrinkwrap, caddies or jewel cases in addition to CD-ROM discs; but, they must be separated and the packages used to ship them to DADC marked as follows: "Clean" - CD-ROM discs only "Dirty" - CD-ROM discs, jewel cases, envelopes, shrinkwrap (Note: I received several messages about this company and "clean" vs. "dirty." Some said "clean" was discs and jewel cases. I'd call the technical support number before shipping.) 2. NE-SAR Systems 420 Ashwood Drive Darlington, PA 16115 Instructions: 1. Send whole discs only, do not cut. 2. Scratch the disc with a sharp object on the front and back. 3. Ship discs without any packaging. Do not send paper/plastic sleeves, paper inserts, mailing labels, mailing envelopes, etc. 4. Ship discs in packages less than 50 lbs. 5. Cost of shipping is your responsibility. 3. This organization recycles computer equipment, including CD-ROMs, and this is all the information sent about them: Gordon.Gillesby-1@tc.umn.edu. The organization is called DRAGnet. Recycling Microfiche: Harbor City Recycling and Plastics, Inc. (I got two addresses 2000 Clinton Street for them.) Baltimore, MD 21224 202/554-8287; fax is 202/484-5208 or Harbor City Recycling and Plastics, Inc. 11201 Spur Wheel Lane Potomac, MD 20854 Instructions: You are responsible for shipping. Take microfiche out of sleeves, box and ship. (One response said to ship UPS.) Happy recycling! ********************************************************** Jay Harris, Assistant Director for Collection Management Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences University of Alabama at Birmingham 1700 University Boulevard Birmingham, AL 35294-0013 Voice 205-934-2460/ FAX 205-934-3545 email: jharris@uab.edu Library website at: http://www.uab.edu/lister **********************************************************
