STARTING FEBRUARY 1, 1998 FULL-TIME, TENURE-TRACK POSITION HEAD, CATALOGING UNIT AND DATABASE PROJECTS COORDINATOR, ACCESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT A full-time, tenure-track position in the Humboldt State University Library. The Position: The University Library seeks a librarian to head its Cataloging Unit and coordinate the development of innovative database projects. The Cataloging Unit consists of the unit head, three FTE support staff, plus intermittent hourly and student assistant positions. The unit is one of five within the Access Services Department which also includes Acquisitions, Circulation, Periodicals, and Systems. Unit functions center around the use of the Geac ADVANCE integrated online library system and OCLC. The Cataloging Unit is responsible for processing information resources in all formats, and presently processes approximately 8,600 volumes each year. Unit activities encompass original and copy cataloging, authority control, online catalog maintenance, end processing, and mendery/bindery. Specific responsibilities of this position entail oversight of all Cataloging Unit operations, including personnel management, budget, hands-on original cataloging, and policy and procedural development and implementation. The unit head will work with faculty and staff to design and coordinate the development of local information databases, e.g., a web-based repository of cataloged images in support of the campus curriculum. The incumbent also will be assigned a limited number of hours on the Library Information Desk. The head of Cataloging reports to the chair of the Access Services Department and represents the unit in other Library forums. Professional Qualifications: Required Minimum: MLS from an ALA-accredited program, with at least three years of professional experience directly related to the responsibilities of this position; supervisory/managerial experience; original cataloging experience, including work with Library of Congress classification; working knowledge of OCLC; cataloging experience on an integrated online library system; familiarity with current trends in the use of technology in libraries and higher education; excellent written and verbal communication skills; commitment to a participatory management style; ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students; demonstrated successful leadership abilities. Preferred: Related professional experience in an academic library; cataloging experience with images, Internet resources, and/or other electronic resources; experience with vendor outsourcing; experience with government documents retrospective conversion. Starting Salary Now in Effect: Appointment will be at the Senior Assistant Librarian ($38,892-$53,880) or Associate Librarian ($49,044-$68,196). Rank and salary are dependent upon the appointee's qualifications and experience. Benefits include an optional 10-month year, 24 days annual vacation, 10-14 legal holidays, sick leave, and competitive retirement and health plans. Librarians are members of the general faculty with rank and are expected to meet requirements for tenure and promotion.
