1998 3M/NMRT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT
*APPLICATIONS ANNOUNCEMENT*

The ALA New Members Round Table (NMRT), is pleased to invite
applications for the 1998 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant.
The grant is sponsored by 3M's Safety and Security Systems Division
which has generously provided support to 85 NMRT members since the
grant's inception in 1975.

GRANT PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION:  The purpose of the grant is to
encourage professional development and participation by new ALA
members in national ALA and NMRT activities.  The 1998 grant will
help finance attendance at the ALA Annual Conference which will be
held in Washington, D.C., beginning June 25, 1998.  The award covers
round trip airfare, lodging, conference registration fees
and some incidental expenses.

ELIGIBILITY:  All ALA/NMRT members within their first ten years of
membership are eligible for the grant.  Prospective applicants who are not
NMRT members may  join NMRT in order to become eligible.

Please note that supporting documentation must be submitted in addition to
completion of the basic application form.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  December 15, 1997
Applications may be submitted via fax (205 348-0760).  Applications must be
postmarked or faxed on or before 12/15/97.

SELECTION CRITERIA:  The committee looks for involvement or potential
involvement in local, state, or national library associations and/or the
potential to contribute to NMRT and ALA if funds are awarded.  Also
considered will be how the grant would benefit the applicant on the job
and/or boost the career/contributions of the applicant.  New ALA/NMRT
members as well as "seasoned" NMRT members are encouraged to apply.

SELECTION PROCESS:  The selection of grant recipients rests solely with the
3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant Committee, composed of NMRT members.
 Selection will take place at the ALA Midwinter Conference in New Orleans,
Louisiana in January 1998.  Up to three (3) recipients will be selected.
Applicants need not be present.

AWARD NOTIFICATION:  The recipient(s) will be notified as soon as possible
after Midwinter Conference.
