Geotechnique special issue Jeff Steely 24 Oct 1997 18:56 UTC

Colleagues, The September issue of _Geotechnique_ we just received was
numbered wrong (I thought) so I emailed the publisher. I have copied my
query and the publisher's reply below. I did not receive the
notification of the special issue (a.k.a. mid-year price increase) and I
thought that perhaps someone else on the list may have missed this
 information.

 Sincerely,
 Jeff Steely

MY ORIGINAL MESSAGE TO THE PUB:
 Dear Mr. Heward-Mills,

I am writing with a question about the numbering of _Geotechnique_. I
hope that you are the person who can answer my question. We recently
received an issue numbered vol.47, no.4 (September 1997). Since the
September issue is usually no.3 and we have not received an issue
numbered vol.47,no.3, I would ordinarily assume that the issue is just
misnumbered. In checking your website, however, the article titles
listed for vol.47, no.3 do not match the titles in this issue I have in
 hand.

Was there a vol.47, no.3 published prior to the Sep 1997 issue I have?
If so, I will claim it through the appropriate channels. If, on the
other hand, the issue I have is actually vol.47, no.3, why are the titles
in the issue different from the online version?

If this is not addressed to the correct person, I would appreciate it if
you would forward this message to the appropriate source.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

 Sincerely,
 Jeff Steely

 THE PUBLISHERS REPLY:
 Dear Mr Steely

 Thank you for your enquiry

There was an extra issue of Geotechnique produced this year, a special
issue on the "pre-failure deformation behaviour of geomaterials"
available at the single issue price of 45 [British pounds] in the US.
This was issue 3, and was published in August. Issue 4 (as received by
you) is the September issue, and there will be an issue number 5
 published in December.

We announced the extra issue with 2 letters to all subscribers in April
and July, and there was an announcement in the June issue of the journal.

I apologise if this material did not reach you, but you still have the
opportunity to buy the issue. If you would like to do so, please contact
our sales and customer services executive Jackie Barry, at
 barry_j@ice.org.uk, tel +44 171 665 2460, fax +44 171 537 3631.

I am aware that this has caused some confusion, and apologise for this.
We did not include information about the 5th issue when we sent out
renewal notices in October last year, because details had not been
finalised at that stage. Subscribers who bought the 1997 volume
therefore were paying for the 4 regular issues only as advertised (we did
decide to keep the price of the extra issue to the regular 45 [British
pounds] single issue price, even though it is 324pp long compared to the
 regular 192pp issues).

I hope this clears up the problem. Please come back to me if I can be of
 any further assistance.

 Regards

 Leon Heward-Mills
