Response from Publisher Dear Ms. Griffin, In response to your e-mail, I wanted to let you know that as of January 1, 1998,Williams & Wilkins has become the publisher for these titles. Prior to this date, the AHA had been self-publishing. As the new publisher, it is our policy to replace any missing issue two times free of charge. So, if a publication is monthly, there would be an opportunity to claim 2 times for 12 separate issues. With regard to your comment about issues being delayed, I wanted to assure you that we adhere to strict publication schedules, and that as such, you should no longer be experiencing any delays. Also, I wanted to let you know that our experience has shown that in general, claims in the US are either due to a postal problem, a change in address, or an issue not being printed on time, and that it is usually not necessary to replace any missing issue more than 2 times to correct any one of these problems. Obviously should there be a unique situation where we need to send out more than 2 claim issues, we will be happy to work with you to make sure that this happens. Lastly, should you have any other questions or concerns regarding this policy or any other Williams & Wilkins policy, please feel free to contact me directly by phone at (410) 361-8018, by fax, at (410) 528-4312 or by e-mail at enolan@wwilkins.com. If it would be easier for you, you could also call our dedicated AHA customer service manager, Janetta Cooley, at 1-800-638-6423. Dear Fellow Serialists, Have any of you folks out there ever heard of a publisher limiting the number of times you may claim issues? The American Heart Assoc. has told us that we may claim twice a year PER SUBSCRIPTION, and that is all. (This does not mean claiming the same issue repeatedy, this means any and all issues). Now perhaps this wouldn't be such a big deal if the journals came in on a regular basis, but for the past two years we have had little luck in getting ANY issues on some titles from them, not just two per journal. (We are a medical school and subscribe to about 5 AHA jornals). We may get all January issues and then none will arrive for the next six months. After much work by our subscription agent, most will eventually arrive, but not all. At this point we are told we are over the limit and cannot get our issues. We were also told, believe it or not, if we persisted in continuing to claim we would be CANCELLED! A phone call to the AHA was extremely unsatisfactory -- the person just repeated the "party line", verified that our address was correct (it was), and suggested that maybe someone was stealing our copies. We are extremely frustrated by this. Claiming is a pain in the neck at the best of times. To pay for and not receive our journals is maddening, and to be treated the way we have been by a publisher makes me furious. Have any others had to deal with this? How did you handle it? **************************** JoAnne Griffin Tufts Health Sciences Library 145 Harrison Ave. Boston, MA 02111 jgriffin@opal.tufts.edu ****************************
