Re: overuse injuries (Mike Scully) ERCELAA@ctrvax.Vanderbilt.Edu 18 Mar 1998 17:49 UTC
Editor's note: Please direct questions regarding the use of the libsup-l archives to Mike Scully (mscully@swedish.org), not to SERIALST. This topic has been discussed before on SERIALST as well. Search, for example, carpal tunnel in the SERIALST archives: http://list.uvm.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=serialst ___________ 2 messages: 1)_____ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 09:20:00 -0800 From: Mike Scully <mscully@SWEDISH.ORG> Subject: Overuse Injuries: libsup-l discussion/archives I promised to get information on accessing the recent libsup-l discussion, and here are the results: There are two ways to obtain libsup-l list archives: 1. Send e-mail to listproc@u.washington.edu In the body of the message, type a request using the format: get LIBSUP-L LIBSUP-L.logyymm Example: get LIBSUP-L LIBSUPL.log9802 ("yymm" = the year and month) Having seen the archives (using the second method below), I can tell you that the files to request (in, I am guessing, separate messages) are: LIBSUP-L.log9801 LIBSUP-L.log9802 LIBSUP-L.log9803 The text of all messages on the list for that month will arrive in your e-mail as one VERY long message (it's way too easy to overload our e-mail program here, but that's another story, and MY problem) in a continuous stream. It may be best to export the resulting message to a file, import that file to your word processor or text-editor, and remove the unwanted material (we talk about all kinds of library-stuff unrelated to repetitive stress injuries, believe it or not!). The list owner (or "Listmom" as she signs her messages, when done in that capacity) also reports you can search the archives via e-mail (it figures....). To do so, send a message to the same 'listproc' address, but in the body of the message, type: search LIBSUP-L topic/terms you seek Example: search LIBSUP-L repetitive stress injury. Boolean searches are also possible: search LIBSUP-L "cts &~repetitive stress" ...for example. (The "&" = 'AND'; can't explain the "~".) 2. The archives are semi-searchable via the University of Washington gopher system. Point your browser to: gopher://lists.u.washington.edu:70/11/public/libsup-l. (No, not everything on the web is accessed with "http://www...." :-) ). Specifically, look at the three most recent files: LIBSUP-L.log9801 LIBSUP-L.log9802 LIBSUP-L.log9803 When you look at any one of these, via gopher, the subject line of each message appears (in date order, it would seem). Click the item of interest to you to view the message itself. By e-mail (and whether by fetching the log, or searching the archives), or by gopher, I can report there are varying discussions including 'ergonomics', 'mouse alternatives', 'carpal tunnel syndrome', 'cts', 'repetitive stress injury', 'rsi', and probably others I missed. Misread the directions for searching the libsup-l archives via e-mail: A boolean search is accomplished by sending, for example: search libsup-l "cts &repetitive stress" (quotes are required) To search for "and but not" (translation: THIS but not THAT), use the example: search libsup-l "cts &~repetitive stress" (again quotes are required; the "&~" denotes "but not", effectively). </end Behind-covering operation completed> Mike Scully * Reference Library * 206/386-2484 Library Systems Coord./* Swedish Medical Center * 206/386-3570 (fax) WMLA QuickDOC * 747 Broadway * mscully@swedish.org Representative * Seattle WA 98122-4307 * www.wln.com/~swedlib1/
