TITLE: Librarian I, Head, Government Documents/Maps Unit LOCATION: Public Services Division, McKeldin Library, University of Maryland Libraries CATEGORY: Associate Staff, Full-Time (12 Month Appointment) SALARY: Commensurate with experience This position is responsible for providing management and leadership for the Government Documents/Maps collections and services at the University of Maryland Libraries, a regional depository library for Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. The Library has been a federal depositiory since 1925, a regional depositiory since 1968, and is an affiliate of the Maryland Office of Planning, State Data Center. It also houses a selective collection of international documents and has a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) service under development. The Map collection is home to approximately 350,000 items, primarily from U.S. government sources. Staffing of the unit includes one additional librarian and three library technicians. RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages all activities of government documents and maps including personnel, planning, collections, and provision of quality services; provides reference service, including nights and weekends, and library instruction including assistance with an extensive collection of electronic information resources; plans and implements programs and services that raise awareness and use of the collections; establishes policies and procedures for the selection, acquisition, circulation, and management of materials from the collections; works in close cooperation with the Technical Services Division on the processing of documents; responsible for meeting the Libraries' collection, service and consulting obligations as a U.S. government documents regional depository; represents the department at professional meetings related to government publications; promotes close cooperation with other public services in the library, particularly the Engineering/Physical Sciences Library which houses a patent and trademark depository and technical reports collection. QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science. Three to five years' professional government documents experience; knowledge of U.S. and international documents; experience with the Federal Depository Library Program; knowledge of microcomputer and Internet applications in libraries, particularly in relation to government publications; strong commitment to public service; good oral and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with others in a rapidly changing environment; relevant supervisory experience; knowledge of emerging trends in government information publication and dissemination. Preferred: Familiarity or experience with cartographic information and collections; teaching or library instruction experience.
