Position Description:

The University of California, Riverside is seeking a creative, flexible,
and dynamic leader to serve as Head of the Acquisitions Department.  Please
apply if you are excited about the dramatic changes in acquisitions and
serials work, have demonstrated effective leadership, and would enjoy the
opportunity to shape and guide the future direction of the Department.

The Technical Services Division is comprised of two Departments,
Acquisitions and Cataloging, which report to the Associate University
Librarian.  The Head of Acquisitions is responsible for: 1) the management
of a centralized acquisitions department, including searching, ordering,
receiving, claiming, and accounting operations for materials of all
formats, electronic and print, monographic and serial, etc.; 2) supervision
of seventeen staff and numerous student assistants; 3)  monitoring
expenditures of a materials budget of over three million dollars; 4)
working closely with the bibliographers and selectors of the Collection
Development Department in identifying, selecting, and establishing business
relationships with publishers and vendors; and 5) negotiating, documenting,
and monitoring agreements with vendors and publishers.  Establishes
acquisitions policies and procedures.  Coordinates acquisitions functions
with other library departments and divisions.

Library Environment:

The University Library of the University of California, Riverside, is a
member of the Association of Research Libraries.  Its collections include
1.9 million volumes and 13,000 current serials housed in four libraries:
the Rivera Library, serving the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social
Sciences, the School of Education, and the Graduate School of Management;
the Science Library, serving the College of Natural and Agricultural
Sciences and the College of Engineering; the Music Library; and the Media
Resources Library.  The Library utilizes OCLC and has recently implemented
the INNOPAC System.  Through the MELVYL Online Catalog, the Library has
cooperative access to the collections of the other eight University of
California campuses, a total of 27 million volumes.  Librarians at UCR have
the opportunity to work collaboratively with the 500 librarians of the UC
System through a variety of systemwide committees and cooperative projects.
 The Technical Services Division will be moving to new quarters in the
Science Library which is under construction and should be ready for
occupancy in July 1998.

Campus and Community Environment:

Located 60 miles east of Los Angeles and 50 miles west of Palm Springs, the
1,200 acre park-like campus is often cited for its natural beauty.  The
campus is experiencing a growth boom under a vigorous campus administration
which is committed to library excellence.  Over 500 faculty members teach
and advise UCR's student body of 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and
professional students.  UCR is a land grant campus, and has many
specialized centers and institutes such as the Center for Social and
Behavioral Science Research, the University of California (Institute for
Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS), the Center for Bibliographic
Studies including the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalog and the
California Newspaper Project, the Center for Ideas and Society, and the
UCR/California Museum of Photography.  Riverside (pop. ca. 250,000) and the
surrounding communities of Southern California offer a variety of cultural,
intellectual, and recreational activities.  The community has always
enthusiastically supported and encouraged the growth and development of the
campus.  Riverside enjoys a moderate cost of living and offers one of the
best housing values in California.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate library degree.  Significant experience in technical services
and/or collection development; successful supervisory experience;
outstanding communication and interpersonal skills;  knowledge of the book
trade and current trends, issues, and developments in acquisitions work.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with the INNOPAC library system; familiarity with OCLC.

Appointment:

The successful candidate will be appointed to the Librarian Series, at a
salary level appropriate to the candidate's qualifications and experience.
Librarians are academic appointees and accrue vacation at the rate of two
days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The
