SERIALS CATALOGER

The Libraries of the University of California, Irvine invite applications
for the position of Serials Cataloger.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Serials Team Leader in the Catalog Department,
the Serials Cataloger performs original and complex copy cataloging for
all types of of serials, including cataloging electronic publications.
Follows current national standards for bibliographic description,
authority work, and subject analysis, and ensures that quality
bibliographic records are created through OCLC to be included in the local
OPAC (ANTPAC) and UC systemwide (MELVYL=AE) databases. Maintains and
organizes the serials cataloging backlog.  Communicates with
bibliographers and other library staff in answering inquiries and
resolving serials bibliographic problems.  Assists the team leader in
documenting local cataloging procedures.  Keeps abreast of the latest
trends and developments in serials cataloging, for example, cataloging
standards and library automation systems.  Maintains proficiency in the
Libraries' enterprise-wide network system, including e-mail, web browsers,
word processing, and other standard applications.  Performs other duties
and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution;
Recent cataloging experience using bibliographic utilities and
integrated online library systems, preferably in serials cataloging.
Knowledge of and working experience with AACR2r, LCRIs, MARC formats and
Library of Congress subject heading and classification system.
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, effectively, flexibly, and
independently in a diverse team-based environment.
Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a production
oriented environment.
Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical skills to resolve complex problems.
Ability to meet the University of California criteria for the
advancement and promotion of librarians.

Preferred:

Knowledge of and working experience with national serials cataloging
standards (CONSER).
Experience in cataloging electronic resources.
Ability to catalog serials in one or more European languages, i.e.,
French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

Desirable:

Knowledge of and working experience with National Library of Medicine
subject headings and classification systems.
Experience with OCLC and Innovative Interfaces, Inc. systems.

THE CATALOG DEPARTMENT

The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000
items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files,
electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and
languages.  Including the Department Head, the staff includes 6
librarians, 19 full-time library assistants and a varying number of
student assistants.  The Department consists of four sections:  Monograph
and Multimedia, Maintenance, East Asian, and Serials.  The Department uses
OCLC for cataloging and the Innovative Interfaces Inc. system as the
library's OPAC.  Current projects include cataloging of government
publications and internet resources.

THE LIBRARIES

The UCI Libraries consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and
the Medical Center Library.  The Main Library primarily serves the Schools
of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate
School of Management, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary
Studies.  The Science Library primarily serves the College of Medicine and
the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and
the Department of Information and Computer Science.  The Medical Center
Library serves the UCI Medical Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from
the main campus.

The UCI Libraries organization includes the use of teams in conjunction
with departments.  The library collection, supported by a budget of $4.5
million, consists of approximately 2 million volumes and 19,000 current
serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively
expanding electronic resources collection.  In addition to the local
INNOPAC integrated library system, the Libraries participate in the
University of California MELVYL System.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE

One of nine University of California campuses, the University of
California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, five
miles from the Pacific Ocean between San Diego and Los Angeles.  The
present enrollment is 17,092 students with a faculty of approximately
1,000 including the Medical School.  The current student population
numbers 13,833 undergraduates, 2,277 graduate students, and 1,171 health
sciences students; a 15% increase in student enrollment by the year 2005
is planned.  Ethnic/minority students represent about 70% of the
undergraduate student body.  The University offers 29 doctoral programs in
addition to the M.D.  UCI is ranked nationally in the top fifty
universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top 25.  UCI is
a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees
and receive potential career status at the time of their initial
appointment.  Librarians are periodically subject to peer review for merit
increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and
quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside
the Library;  3) university and public service; and 4) research and other
creative activity.  They are entitled to two days per month of annual
leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and
all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The
University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of
group life and health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to
approximately 40% of salary.

SALARY:  commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of
$31,656 - $40,512 (Assistant Librarian I - Associate Librarian II).
