Position Vacancy

Title:  Head, Acquisitions Unit

Description:  Responsible for the management and efficient operation
of the Acquisitions Unit which uses Geac ADVANCE for ordering,
receiving, serials check-in, claiming  and payment for materials in
all formats. Directs the work of three supervisors and staff of 18,
analyzes workflow, establishes priorities and coordinates training of
all other library units using the ADVANCE acquisitions and serials
modules.

The Acquisitions Unit currently handles 60,000 monographic volumes per
year received on domestic and foreign approval plans as standing and
single orders plus 11,000 serial subscriptions, expending a total
materials budget of $5 million.   The Acquisitions staff is also
responsible for serials bindery preparation. The Head of the
Acquisitions Unit works closely with the three Cataloging Units, the
Director of Collection Services and the Director of Technical Services
to whom this position reports. The Unit has recently begun a project
to transfer domestic and foreign serial subscriptions to new vendors
and is now placing orders electronically with its primary vendor for
North American monographic imprints.

New York University Libraries:  Library facilities at New York
University serve the school's 50,000 students and faculty and contain
more than 4 million volumes.  The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library houses 3
million of these volumes and serves as the university's principal
research resource.  New York University is a member of the Research
Libraries Group and utilizes RLG's Research Libraries Information
Network and automated acquisitions system.  NYU also serves as the
administrative headquarters of the Research Library Association of
South Manhattan, a consortium which includes four academic
institutions in Greenwich Village.  An online integrated catalog is
available to users at all four consortium institutions.

Qualifications:  Accredited Master's degree in library science.
Subject master's degree required for tenure. Minimum of two years of
professional experience working in an acquisitions department; ability
to plan, organize, and guide the work of a professional,
administrative and clerical staff in a complex, computer-based
environment; demonstrated involvement in continuing education or
professional activities dealing with the state of the art in
automation and acquisitions; knowledge of the book and serial
publishing trade; experience with automated systems and electronic
formats; and familiarity with cataloging and the MARC format; reading
knowledge of one or more foreign languages and excellent written and
oral communication skills.

Salary/Benefits:  Faculty status, attractive benefits package
including five weeks annual vacation.  Salary commensurate with
experience and background.  Minimum: $42,000.
