---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:03:47 -0400 From: Jane Murray <JMURRAY@HSL1.AB.UMD.EDU> Subject: Position announcement: Baltimore, MD VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT University of Maryland, Baltimore Position Title: Head, Acquisitions/Serials Department (Associate Librarian II) Description: Leads and manages the Acquisitions/Serials department of 3.5 FTE, which is responsible for selection, pre-order searching and verification, ordering, receiving, claiming and approving invoices for monographs and serials in all formats. Establishes collection development policies and procedures and oversees their implementation to develop a balanced collection. Provides initiative and leadership in developing policies regarding the provision of electronic resources for the Library. Oversees a collections budget of over $1,000,000 for the purchase of monographs, serials, electronic resources, standing orders, and material received through the Library's approval plan. Acts as liaison to the University's procurement office, preparing Requests for Proposals or Invitations for Bid for contract periodicals, binding, and monograph vendors, evaluating proposals received, selecting vendors, and evaluating their performance. The University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library serves the professional schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and the University of Maryland Medical Systems. The library is fully automated and networked with access to multiple information platforms and databases. Qualifications: Required: MLS from ALA-accredited library school; 3-5 years experience related to acquisitions and serials, including effective supervision, budgetary analysis and development, and the building and fostering of positive faculty relations; excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of US and foreign publishing industry and licensing issues; effective analytical and organizational skills. Desirable: Experience in an academic or health sciences/human services library; experience with DRA acquisitions and serials control systems, OCLC, and MARC formats; involvement in professional activities. Salary/Benefits: Salary range is $25,596-$47,615; excellent flexible benefits package which includes tuition assistance.
