 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 Librarians are responsible for selecting, organizing and providing access
to information needed by the students, faculty and staff of Oregon State
University located both on and off the main campus.  Librarians must know
a variety of scholarly and general information sources and anticipate the
effect of technological change and trends on the delivery of library
services and the information literacy of library users.  In the context of
a library, the effect of change is cumulative in nature so both depth and
breadth of experience are important to the institution.

 As tenure-track faculty members, OSU librarians serve on committees and
task forces both at the departmental and university level and take a
leadership role in local, state and national/international professional
and scholarly societies and organizations.  Librarians engage in research
and professional development by contributing to professional journals,
presenting at regional and national conferences and workshops.

 Librarians serve as active members of at least one Information Services
team.  In this capacity, their duties include: attending meetings,
collaborating with peers regarding problem-solving and completing team
assignments to further the goals of the Library,

 Information Services and the University.  Typically, librarians also make
a significant contribution to the on-going work of more than one team.

 Duties and assignments are subject to change given the dynamic
organization of Information Services.  Current duties are negotiated in
the annual agreement.

 SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 Reporting to the Sponsor of the Cataloging Teams, the Serials Catalog
Librarian catalogs serial publications and resources in any physical or
electronic format providing the description, classification, subject
headings and other access points as appropriate using AACR2 and LCRIs,
CONSER manuals, Library of Congress Classification Schedules, Library of
Congress Subject Headings and the Library of Congress Authority File.  The
Librarian performs original cataloging and complex copy cataloging.  In an
effort to more fully utilize the local integrated library system, the
Librarian develops and maintains an understanding of system indexing.  The
Librarian is expected to maintain connections with serial librarians at
other institutions as well as an awareness of national cataloging
standards and to actively pursue knowledge in this area. The Librarian
participates in the Serials Cataloging Team; serves as leader in
developing workflows, procedures and online electronic services f!  or
serials and may be asked to contribute to Information Services project
activities.  This position coordinates special serial-related projects as
needed, participates in the planning and implementation of authority
control methods and problem resolution and provides guidance to support
staff working with serial publications.  The Librarian communicates with
other Cataloging Teams and other areas in The Valley Library dealing with
serials Technical Services (Acquisitions, Government Publications,
Hatfield Marine Science Center) and works with these areas to resolve
situations concerning serial bibliographic control.  Library-wide serial
issues are coordinated with the Collection Services and the Reference &
Research Consulting Teams.

 QUALIFICATIONS

 MLS from an ALA-accredited library program or foreign equivalent; minimum
of two years recent professional serials cataloging experience, preferably
in an academic or research library; a familiarity with MARC, AACR2, LCRI,
LCSH, LCCS (preferred) or DDC, and authority control ; experience with a
bibliographic utility and local integrated system; demonstrated ability to
cope with and advocate for change; knowledge of current information
technologies; experience working independently and collaboratively; strong
analytical skills and problem-solving abilities; demonstrated commitment
and sensitivity to undergraduate education and a learning environment
which supports diversity;  and the demonstrated ability to conduct
research and participate in scholarly activities are required.

 Preferred: Previous experience cataloging government documents serials as
well as electronic resources; bibliographic knowledge of at least one
foreign language; experience with OCLC; and demonstrated experience
analyzing workflow and writing procedures and policies.

 SETTING

 Oregon State University is one of only ten American universities to hold
the land, sea and space grant designation and is one of two universities
in the Pacific Northwest to achieve Carnegie Research I status.  The
University Libraries consist of a main collection of over one million
volumes in The Valley Library on the Corvallis campus and one branch
library in Newport. Upon completion of a $40 million renovation/expansion
project in December 1998, The Valley Library will total 340,000 sq. ft.
and offer state-of-the-art library and information services.  The main
floor of The Valley Library houses an Information Commons.  The
Information Commons furthers the University's goal of offering each
student a "compelling learning experience" by providing a central campus
resource which accommodates the traditional, innovative and experimental

Information Services which also includes the Communication Media Center,

 EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS & APPLICATION PROCEDURE

 Full-time, 12-month, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant
Professor.  Minimum salary is $32,000; appointment beyond minimum
commensurate with education/experience as it relates to the position.  To
