Subject: Vacancy Announcement: Serials Librarian

HEAD OF SERIALS SECTION, ACQUISITIONS DEPARTMENT

        The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library seeks a creative
        and energetic serials librarian to manage its serials acquisitions,
        binding, and information services.  This position directly supervises 8
        staff in the Serials Acquisitions and Serials Information and Binding
        Units.  The serials librarian is responsible for coordinating serials
        related processes; monitoring expenditure of serials funds; business
        relationships with serials vendors (including evaluation of performance);
        project management (e.g., serials cancellations, transfers, electronic
        products, system migration) and oversight of the serials binding
        and serials public service desk.  The successful candidate must be
        able to manage rapid change in a complex environment, to address
        personnel, technical, and public service issues effectively, and
        to collaborate with others in providing high quality service.  The
        position reports to the Head of Acquisitions.  The Acquisitions
        Department, located in Davis Library, consists of three sections:
        Searching, Order, and Serials, with a staff of 27.  The Serials Section
        includes the Serials Acquisitions and Serials Information and
        Binding Units with a total of 9 full-time staff and 3 graduate
        assistants. The department expends ca. $7 million annually, $3.4

QUALIFICATIONS

        Required: ALA-accredited Masters degree in Library Science; basic
        management skills; excellent written and oral communication skills;
        experience with office automation applications: word processing,
        spreadsheet creation, email, and telnet; demonstrated ability to
        facilitate organizational and technological change; and demonstrated
        ability to lead and direct group work.

        Preferred: Previous library experience; recent technical experience with
        library systems (INNOPAC and/or DRA preferred); supervisory experience;
        knowledge of serials publishing and pricing; experience with electronic
        information resources (particularly with electronic serials); familiarity
        with serials standards and issues; knowledge of preservation issues;
        commitment to active professional life; and reading knowledge of a modern
        Western European language.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

        This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment with a minimum salary
        of $29,000 and standard State benefits of annual and sick leave, insurance
        coverage and State, TIAA-CREF or other optional retirement plans.
