---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 16:18:35 -0600 From: Karen Muller <kmuller@ALA.ORG> Subject: AACR2 1998 Revision to be published The publishers of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules * the American Library Association, the Canadian Library Association and the Library Association * announce revised delivery dates for Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd Edition, 1998 Revision (AACR2R). For the first time, AACR will be available in parallel print and electronic formats, both produced from the same base SGML file. The traditional print version, a consolidated reprinting of all changes, corrections, and amendments authorized by the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC) since 1988, will be shipped the week of December 28, 1998. The electronic version, AACR2-e, a hypertext package on CD-ROM, will be shipped the week of November 2, 1998. Both versions were announced for delivery earlier this year. In order to incorporate a full index in the electronic version, an enhancement requested by the cataloging community, portions of the SGML file were changed, necessitating thorough review for accuracy. The SGML file has now been sent to the compositor for preparation of the print version, which takes longer to manufacture than the CD which contains the electronic version. The publishers decided to make the electronic version available when ready, rather than holding it until the print version was also available. As noted, both are based on the same SGML file. The 1998 revision incorporates the group of revisions previously published as Amendments 1993 as well as additional revisions, as yet unpublished, approved by the Joint Steering Committee for revision of AACR between 1992 and 1997. The national bibliographic agencies of Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States will implement these latest rule revisions over the course of the coming months as material clears the workflow in each of the institutions and as copies of the revised text become available.
