Subject: Position Announcement - Director, Collection Development - UNLV

Following is a revised position announcement replacing the announcement
posted in August.

DIRECTOR OF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

The UNLV Libraries invite applications for the position of Director of
Collection Development and Management at the associate professor rank.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the successful
candidate will: manage an annual materials acquisition budget in excess of
$3.3 million and a current collection of approximately 900,000 volumes,
7250 serial titles, and over one million microforms; supervise the
Collection Development Coordinating Team, the Head of Materials Ordering
and Receiving, and Interlibrary Loan; coordinate collection development
activities of bibliographers and other sections; evaluate and provide
leadership in building collections to meet the needs of new and existing
programs; negotiate vendor and consortial agreements; maintain effective
communication with academic departments and the wider university
community; and serve as the Libraries' specialist in the areas of
intellectual property rights and copyright. A record of professional
growth, scholarship/creative activity and service in keeping with
University standards is expected for promotion and tenure consideration.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required:  MLS from an ALA accredited program or
international equivalent; a minimum of 5 years of increasing professional
responsibility and leadership with collection-development-related
activities in an academic or research library; supervisory and budget
management experience; broad knowledge and experience with
academic/research collection development and management issues,
information technology, and automation; knowledge of trends in publishing
and research; working knowledge of standard selection and evaluation
methods and tools and automated acquisition systems; evidence of strong
leadership, communication, and decision making skills; evidence of
professional and scholarly activity; commitment to fostering a
collaborative work environment.

Preferred:  A second master's degree or an earned doctorate; experience
with Innovative Interface's automated system.

SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS:  This is a tenure-track position.  Salary is
competitive and commensurate with experience and background; faculty
status, attractive benefits package, including 24 days annual leave,
retirement options, health insurance, and no state income tax.   For more

THE SETTING:  UNLV is Nevada's largest comprehensive,
doctoral-degree-granting institution with 21,000 students and more than
700 full-time faculty. The UNLV libraries are comprised of the main James
R. Dickinson Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, the Architecture
Studies Library, and a soon-to-be constructed Music Library.
Construction on a new main library, the Lied Library, began in early 1998.
This 300,000 square foot, $51 million facility will include an Information
Commons and a fully wired four-classroom Collaborative Learning Center.
These and other currently advertised library faculty positions are the
result of retirements, new positions assigned, and organizational
restructuring driven by the need to provide dynamic leadership for
expanded library collections and services in the Lied Library in the 21st
