CONTEXT: The acquisitions function is an essential component of a redesigned and renamed (to) Information Processing Center. Changes in the publishing marketplace as well as in the vendor community serving library acquisitions has provided the impetus for a fundamental rethinking of how libraries provide for the information needs of their users. Housed in new state-of-the-art quarters and using Endeavor�s Voyager information system the IPC is well-positioned for the future. DESCRIPTION: Working collaboratively with the other members of the Goldstein Information Processing Center, particularly with the Head of Serials and the Head of Monographic Acquisitions, is responsible for providing coordinated support services for the acquisition of library material, including material in electronic form, and the receipt and processing of government documents. RESPONSIBILITIES: Supports the broad range of acquisitions services offered by the Goldstein Information Processing Center. Particular responsibility for the following areas: Electronic Resources: works collaboratively with and in support of staff in acquisitions, collection development, public services and cataloging in the ongoing development of goals and strategies to acquire and manage electronic information. In consultation with the Director for Collection Development maintains license agreements and coordinates the ordering and renewal of electronic resources. Collaborates with heads of cataloging units to ensure public access and record maintenance. Maintains a central repository of information on licenses and other information regarding the acquisition of digital information. Keeps current with developments and emerging trends in the acquisitions of electronic resources and works closely with library staff on related issues. Government Documents: working closely with collection development, cataloging reference staff, coordinates and supports the acquisition, cataloging and handling of government documents (including U.S.government, European Union, etc.) in various formats. Acts as library�s representative with appropriate governmental agencies Stewardship: serves as the direct contact for Library Development staff and acquisitions coordinator in support of a very active development program to increase the number of endowed funds for library materials and to ensure stewardship of those funds. Serves as back-up to the Head of Serials and Head of Monographic Acquisitions when necessary. May supervise professional and/or non-professional staff QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent in theory or practice. Experience in library acquisitions or the publishing industry. Knowledge of trends in electronic resources and issues related to providing access to electronic resources preferred. Effective communication skills and the ability to function in a rapidly changing processing environment. Must be able to work in a collaborative and supportive manner with staff from various constituencies within the Penn Libraries.
