Position:               Serials Coordinator, Serials and Electronic Resources
Department(S/ER)

Available:              Immediately

Responsibilities:       Manages the S/ER Acquisition Section and the S/ER
Cataloging Section; develops and implements priorities, work flows and
procedures for acquisition, receipt, and cataloging of serials and
continuations; participates in library-wide forums on all aspects of serials
policy; serves as serials liaison with other Technical Services departments,
collection managers, and others throughout the Libraries.  Participates
actively as a management team member in department planning, policy-making
and operations; supervises ten staff members and several student assistants.
Has direct responsibility for domestic and foreign subscriptions; oversees
ordering, copy cataloging, check-in, claiming, holdings maintenance and
problem resolution for all subscriptions, including gifts, exchanges,
memberships, and documents; contributes original serials cataloging through
OCLC.  Monitors and analyzes the operations of the sections and provides:
monthly written and statistical reports of activities and  accomplishments,
plans for improving services and activities, and assessments of needed
resources.  Communicates and interprets serials policies, procedures,
changes and new services to technical services staff and collection
managers.  Keeps abreast of serials acquisition and cataloging trends,
participates in national discussions (ACQNET, SERIALST, AUTOCAT); evaluates
the potential use of new services and technologies.  Will assist with future
developments such as CONSER participation, cataloging of electronic
resources, and developing Metadata standards.  Reports to and may act in the
place of the Head, Serials and Electronic Resources Department. Serves on
appropriate library, university and professional committees.  Librarians
have faculty status and are expected to meet University requirements for
promotions and tenure, including research, publication and service.

Department:             The Serials and Electronic Resources Department
is responsible for 25,000+ titles on subscription or in electronic format.
The staff consists of 2 librarians, 13 FTE civil
service employees, and students assistants.
The department's three sections - Serial Acquisitions, Serial
Cataloging, and Electronic Resources - handle all aspects of acquiring,
processing, cataloging, and records maintenance for serials and all formats
of electronic resources.  The serials sections handle all continuations
regardless of sources, including gifts, exchanges, standing orders, and
depository programs.  The electronic resources section works with electronic
publishers, aggregators, library consortia and individual information
providers to acquire, lease, provide access or establish links to electronic
resources via the Libraries' OPAC and through the Libraries' web site.  The
Department negotiates and manages licenses for the Libraries' electronic
resources.

Qualifications:         Required: Master's degree from an
ALA-accredited program;
minimum of 2 years relevant professional experience in serials operations;
knowledge of serial cataloging, including AACR2r, CONSER, and MARC
cataloging standards; demonstrated ability to manage operations, solve
complex problems, and supervise support staff; strong interpersonal
communication skills, both oral and written.  Highly Desirable:  Relevant
experience in an academic or research library; familiarity with national
trends in serials publishing and serial vendor evaluation; knowledge of
Metadata and newer electronic standards such as the Dublin Core.

Salary and Rank:        $32,000 minimum.  Faculty rank & salary dependent upon
experience & and qualifications.

information network linking state- supported academic libraries, the
libraries of community/technical colleges, the State Library of Ohio,
and the libraries of many private academic institutions.
OhioLINK includes a shared central catalog and a statewide circulation
and delivery network and a vast
selection of electronic resources.
