Subject: ALA Midwinter Meeting announcement

WHAT IS THE EURO, AND HOW WILL IT EFFECT MY SERIALS ACQUISITIONS?

If you are wondering what this new European currency is, and what its
potential impact will be on both the European periodicals trade as well as
on the U.S. dollar and economy, then plan to attend the General Membership
Meeting of the ACRL Western European Specialists Section, at the ALA
Midwinter Meeting!

Date: Monday, February 1,1999,
Time: 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Place: Warwick Hotel, Crystal Ballroom

A panel discussion on the Euro and its impact will include the speakers:

1. Jeffrey Wrase, an economist in the Research Department, Federal Reserve
Bank of Philadelphia, who will offer a background to the Euro, and will discuss
its possible effects on the U.S. dollar and upon the U.S. economy as a
whole;
2. Geert Visscher, Director of Finance & Operations, Swets & Zeitlinger, BV
(Lisse, The Netherlands), who will discuss the implications of the Euro in
European serials publishing and in their acquisition by North American
libraries;
3. Gilles de La Rochefoucauld, President, Aux Amateurs de Livres, who will
discuss the impact of the Euro on the French book trade and upon
acquisitions of French books abroad;
4. And, we hope to have a speaker from the European Commission Delegation
to the U.S., Washington D.C., who will provide further background
information on the Euro. The Delegation has already provided me with one
hundred copies each of two informative pamphlets about the Euro, which will
be available at the meeting--get there early to get copies!

Each member of the panel will present a brief paper, all of which will be
followed by questions among the panel, and from you, the audience.

Please direct all questions to me, the WESS Member-at-Large, and
coordinator of this event. Thank you.
