Government Documents/Map Librarian

The J. Robert Van Pelt Library seeks a Government Documents/Map librarian
with a commitment to public service and an enthusiasm for government
resources. This individual will promote, and provide access to, the
depository collections as a member of the Reference and Instructional
Services Team. J. Robert Van Pelt Library is a federal selective depository
(47%) and a Michigan state depository. The map room houses over 100,000
maps.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As the resident expert in areas of print and electronic government
information resources, this position provides diverse groups with reference
service, research assistance, and formal and informal instruction and
training.
As manager of the Library's federal and state depository collections (print
and electronic formats), this position keeps abreast of, and communicates,
trends in federal and state of MI documents; develops policies, procedures
and long range plans; serves as contact person for GPO and Library of MI;
implements initiatives to further develop electronic access; coordinates
MARCIVE tape loads with Technical and Automated services; establishes
workflow that capitalizes on automated processing; and supervises staff.
The position also oversees the Library's map collection and Microforms
Room; serves on Library and University committees; and participates in
state, regional, and national professional activities.
Required: Master's Degree from an ALA accredited institution, or
information science program, or an equivalent combination of education and
experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
One year experience providing reference service. Demonstrated familiarity
with GPO dataloads. Excellent interpersonal, customer service, problem
solving, and oral/written communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of
government documents, Internet, and electronic resources.
Desirable: Supervisory experience. Experience providing general reference,
instruction, and/or training. Demonstrated familiarity with technical and
legal issues involved in networking electronic resources. Demonstrated
ability to work on a team, as well as independently. Demonstrated strong
public service commitment. Familiarity with academic/research library
environment. Knowledge of trends in government information.
Benefits: Salary range $25,929-30,250. Competitive benefits package

Serials/Acquistions Librarian

The J. Robert Van Pelt Library seeks a Serials/Acquisitions Librarian to
oversee acquisition activities and end processing for all library
materials, to direct and manage the cataloging and processing of all
serials, to provide leadership for the continuing development of
serials/acquisitions automation, and to work closely with Collection
Management staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage serial cataloging functions; provide original cataloging and oversee
copy cataloging; manage serials processing. Supervise check-in of serials
in various formats. Catalog and process electronic serials (includes URL
management). Work collaboratively to develop goals and strategies to
acquire and manage electronic resources. Direct acquisitions of all library
materials. Revise procedures and direct workflow to utilize new
technologies and to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of
Technical Services operations. Maintain departmental statistics and produce
necessary reports. Collaborate with Monographic Cataloging Manager to
assure public access and record maintenance. Maintain currency in emerging
issue in the acquisition of electronic resources and work with library
groups considering issues related to resources and the electronic
environment. Foster and support a collaborative approach to problem solving
and decision making. Serve on committees within the library and the
university. Participate in local, regional, state and national professional
activities. Exercise functional and administrative supervision over support
staff and student assistants.
Required: Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution or information
science program. Two years experience working in serials cataloging,
serials management and/or acquisitions. Experience working with automated
bibliographic utilities (e.g. OCLC). Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2, LC
classification, LCSH and USMARC formats; library trends in an electronic
environment; and current automated library systems. Demonstrated competence
in current library technology applications. Demonstrated ability to
function in a collaborative, service-oriented environment and to adapt to a
frequently changing environment. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving,
team leadership, and written/oral communication skills.
Desirable: Experience in a research or an academic library in one of the
following areas: serials cataloging or acquisitions. Experience using the
library management system Voyager. Demonstrated knowledge of the National
Serials Cataloging Standards (CONSER). Demonstrated ability to work
effectively as part of a team as well as independently. Demonstrated
commitment to the service and educational roles of academic libraries.
